Hello !

I am looking to buy an all-in-one camera this Christmas. I hate to carry a bag with 5 kg of lenz with me. So, I think about Sony R1 and Samsung Digimax 815. I read a lot of positive reviews about Sony and a lot of conroversialfeedbacks about Samsung !? Sony R1 was released 2 years ago and that is my main obstacle. Is Sony going to release a new r2 ? I hate to buy out of day products. Any advise about my hesitations ? Thanks.

No one knows about a possible R2 , however many are of the opinionthat a future improved R2 would eat into the sales of the A100.

So many are betting the R series is at an end.

It wasn't released "2 years ago".

The Sony DSC-R1 wasn't even announced until September 2005, when they provided preproduction units to reviewers like Steve for "first look" previews of it. It wasn't shipping until after that. It's only a one year old product.

The R1 is no doubt an awesome camera. Being new to photography I figured it would be to much for me at this time. I decided to get the next best thing and purchased the H5. Absolutely love it!

After reading coments regarding the R1 I decided to check with Sony.ca. Not being a surprise the R1 is not listed. I also tried via the search bar and all I got were available accessories.

In the event this may help some last minute shoppers I did find the camera available at Tiger Direct for for anyone interested.

Tiger's price is way out of line. Even Wolf/Ritz Camera is only getting $799 for it. Newegg's price is typical (a little less than Wolf and Ritz).

J&R has it for less (and they are a very reputable vendor, and have a better return policy compared to the vast majority of online dealers around)

Sony DSC-R1 at J&R for $699.99

I see some 21 stores in our price search engine that carry it (but, J&R has the lowest price from a dealer that I'd do business with).

At that price, I'm even tempted to get one. For a camera with it's lens quality, it's a bargain at that price. But, my wife wouldn't appreciate it. So, I'd better not. :-)

Like Jim C, I am also very tempted by the Sony R-1. There does not look like there will be a replacement, and equipping a dslr with a lens equal to that of the R-1 would be very pricey, far more than the current market price of $699 for the R-1.

It looks like J&R sold out (the link no longer works and a search of their site no longer shows the camera).
