Default Sony F717 vs. Nikon 5700

I am considering buying one of the two cameras listed in the subject. My main concern is the difference in shutter speeds between the two cameras. The Nikon offers speeds from 8 sec to 1/4000 sec and up to 5 min of bulb. The Sony offers 30 sec to 1/1000 of a sec.

I really like the Sony. I am just concerned that the slower shutter speed might be a handicap. Is this true? Also, is the 5 min bulb time on the Nikon really that much of a plus?

I have a final question about purchasing either of these. There are several places on the internet that offer each camera at prices severla hundred dollars less than normal. Should I stay away from these?

Thank you,
Chris

You might find other discriminants between the Nikon and the Sony, but shutter speed range should not be one of them.

I can't imagine ANY consumer/prosumer grade camera with uncooled sensor making an acceptable image (one that's not totally dominated by noise) at 5 minutes exposure. Even 30 second exposure is at the outer edge of the envelop for this class of camera.

hi.
I have a F707. When shooting insects in flight, 1/1000 is too slow.
For all the other work it is fine.
So the quest is what wil you do with it.
Take also in consideration: accu life, memory cards, (sticks are know much cheaper!)
Good luck.
