Hi All,

I am getting to hear a lot fo negatives about the DSC-H9 camera. And many are returning this camera. Becasue I stay in India, and I am planning to get the camera from US through somebody, and I will not be having a chance to return the camera.

Many people are not happy with the Image Quality, CA and Purple Fringing(PF), and many more. Some of them said that they exchanged the camera, and the results were better. I am not sure how Can I excahnge the camera, If I buying this camera from US(Because I will not have any chance for exchanging). The reviews , I have read are the following, and they are shocking,

http://www.tlc-systems.com/artzen2-0013.htm
http://www.tlc-systems.com/artzen2-0014.htm
http://www.tlc-systems.com/artzen2-0015.htm
http://www.tlc-systems.com/artzen2-0016.htm
And also, from Dcresource,

http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31054

And also the review from neocamera, is not impressive. I am hearing everybody saying about PF and CA , and also I see these things in their published photos. These PF anCA are not distinctly availalbe in brands( I am not sure Sony is compromosing with these things for Getting Zoom and other things)

http://www.neocamera.com/review_sony_h9_more.html

Please let me know, is it a good buy, after reading these above reviews. I am not able to decide and also Cannon S5 IS is released. I know, I cant compare H9 with S% , but still....

If you are not too sure but want a Sony, look at the DSC-H5 or DSC-H2 (previous models). You'll find them for not much in the US.

Nagesh

To be fair there is indeed someimage quality issues, but this could be just some of the first batch as a lot of peopleseem happy with their camera's.

As someone suggested on another thread here, WAIT for themain reviews form Steves, DPReview andDCResource to find out how they perceive the H9.

Would also agree with Gaul the H2 is going for a song now and is a proven product, check the reviews.

I don't get the poor image quality thing, my cameras from Sony have never took a bad photo that wasn't my fault. I have never had a bad photo using a tripod and I never had the purple issue either.

Yeah.. I won't be sure until I'll try myself..

I am a Sony user for 3 years already (DSC-V!).. After I saw the images here: http://www.neocamera.com/review_sony_h9_more.html, I am a bit shocked.. I cannot believe that these pics are made by sony camera.. What a confusion.

If it is so, I'll better stick with my V1 until I'll be able to get a dSLR.. at least I have no complaints about image quality, if I shoot in the range of conditions which my camera is capable of..

Waiting impatiently for Steve's review of H9. He's got my trust. H9 looks so promissing for me.

Here's another review (comparison of a panny and the H7), it's in norwegian so you'll need a translator (use google's) or just look a the pic's, there's also a samples gallery at the end.

http://www.akam.no/test/digitalkamer...t_sony/39224/1

I've had the H9 for a few weeks now, I've posted how I feel about this camera in another tread here.

There's a lot of plus's and minus's, you'll need to decide whether you can live with the minus's. Chances of Sony providing a firmware fix to all the reported problems is probably nill.

I would also like to thank nickphoto123 for all of his hard work and the multitude of reviews he has posted (lots of people all over the web have noticed).

Hi Digitalgal

Whatever you decide make sure you hang on to your Sony V1, I have a mate with this camera and it takes awesome pics, remember your V1 has a faster f/2.8-f/4 Vario-Sonnar lens and only 5.2 mpixels on a 1/1.8" sensor which is larger and faster than the H9, sadlythey just don't make em like Sony V1 and F series anymore.

Here's another personal review:

Here's a bunch of sample images from the H9 from another blog:

http://www.photographyblog.com/revie...t_dsc_h9_3.php

And another group of photo's that compare the H1 to the H9

Its a hard thing reading a personal review from the average person, who knows what their experience level and knowledge level is, I take reviews like a grain of salt I will do my own review then make my decision on a camera some people just bash to bash. Buda what did you feel were the negatives of the camera? Please advise Thanks

Hello Cyberf828,

I usually don't follow personal reviews as well, but since these reviews seem to follow exactly what everyone else is saying (ok not absolutely everyone), and there sample pictures do show problems, hard not to believe what they are reporting.

Personally

Pro's

- Fantastic 3" movable LCD that is actually usable in bright daylight-
- Wonderful 15x optical lens
- Very fast focus in most situations (when 13x - 15x focus hunts a bit)
- Very nice video mode (in Fine), with great Audio and your able to use the zoom
- A nice amount of Manual control
- Very powerful flash

Con's

- Indoor area's or places With normal to low light contain posterization/water color effects (personally I think this is all due to over processing of noise, i.e. the BIONZ effect).
- Very high jpeg compression
- Unable to set Fine mode
- Flash recycle times (when not in auto mode, flash recycle can take up to 10sec)
- Useless Auto mode in most situations (Automatically goes to 400 ISO indoors)
- At the complete wide end, you'll notice edge focus softness and a lot more CA then normal.
- Overall build quality

I still love my H9, but it's definitely not a P&S camera for anyone not willing to work for there shots. For the cost of this camera, the IQ should be a lot better. This is the first time I bought a camera as soon as it came out of the gate, usually I wait for the reviews to hit before I jump.... I guess I fell in love with the feature list this camera had... oh well live and learn.

I'm hoping Sony will come out with a firmware patch which will address the ability to choose between Fine and Standard mode stills and provide the ability to turn OFF noise reduction.... I know this will affect performance, but that should be my choice, after all don't we buy cameras for image quality?
