I would think the H2/H5 are hard to find now, but if you can still find a new one of either that is what I would be recommending.

My first choice would be the H-2/H-5 which can often be found on ebay. The H-9 is not a bad choice at all. There are many happy owners out there. In fact here is a photo sample frok the H-9.

I think it depends on the type pictures you friend plans to take. If it's landscapes and scenery go with the H5. If your friend plans to take a lot of pictures where people/kids are moving and the flash is going to be involved, I'd go with the H9 since it has a much faster flash recharge than my H5 does. I love my H5, but the slow flash recharge has been a real annoyance for me. My H9 also has better and faster autofocus.
