Does anyone know if the H9 has a preflash to it that would prevent or interfere with theuse of an optical slave?

Yes, from what I can determine from a bit of research.

But, you can find optical triggers that are "digital aware" (designed to ignore preflashes). Here's an example (and they also sell them in a 3 pack for $74.95):

Thanks for the information Jim. I know that the H9 has a slow sync setting and I wondered what effect that might have on the slave.

I doubt it would make any difference. A digital camera without a separate sensor for measuring reflected light from the flash during the exposure is still going to need a metering preflash to judge the length of the main flash burst needed (unless you have a camera with manual power settings for flash to get around it).

Unlike modern film cameras that use "off the film" metering during the exposure with flash so that they know when they've got enough light, most digital cameras use a metering preflash (since the sensors used don't reflect light in the same way as film, making it difficult to meter a flash during the exposure).
