DonalDuc,

I didnt quite catch whether you think the TX5 will be at par with the TX7 on image quality ?

Same sensor, same (vertical) lenses ----> same quality

Buuuut: smaller touchscreen (3" : 3.5"), much fewer pixels (230th:960th), no fullHD, no stereo, no docking station ... ~ same price :-(

And the loser is ..... TX5 !

But: suitable for bath tube !
For underwater I have my Pentax WS80 for half-TX5-price (5x zoom)

I read you.. however, as already discussed, I need the camera for marathon running.

I have considered other newer rugged cameras: Panasonic TS2, Canon D10 (not really, too clumsy), Olympus Tough 8010 (not really, image quality too poor), Pentax WS 90 (when out)...

... and in the rugged game, the Sony TX5 seems to be the winner...

... any counter-takes on that would be appreciated... Im still waiting for my final decision.

I guess I take your point on the tochscreen on TX7 into account.. too bad that I can't use that one... but.. if I get the same image quality with the TX5, Im pretty happy.

Torr-

To get the watertight case on the TX-5, Sony opted to reduce some of the TX-7 features, it probably was a cost of producing the watertight case kind of offset.

I sincerely believe that for your purposes you would be more effectively served by the TX-5, even with its reduced feature set.

I think also! Much features are not always the best. Hehe, I use ~ 10% of all features of my cameras, the rest is for ME senseless ... but it's fine to have them ... even never used.

... especially cat detection ... which camera has rain worm detection?
Perhaps I have, but do not know?

To Donalduc's point on cat and worm detection, when I first test out my Hx5, I could not believe its intelligence in detecting my smile because my really old 6 years old Sony still P & S camera is really antique..devoid of features. I did not realized I was so behind in camera's features development.

Once I set up "slight smile" or "big smile" detection, my Hx5 recognized my smile and snap my portrait. I felt so good, as if my pet (Hx5) knows me. I like cats and dogs but due to allegic reaction to their fur, I could not raise them.

DonalDuc, have any idea if the Sony TX7 has the same problems that the Sony HX5V with barrel distortion? Thanks

I do not make photos of wine and beer barrels - so I never saw barrel distortion.
But who searches ... he will find. :-)
