Bill-

You go to Scene Modes, select the desired Scene Mode, in your example it was the Portrait Scene Mode. Then leaving the mode Selector in the Scene Modes position, you take your photo.

intelligent sets the right scene for you, set it up also for dual shot in difficult situations and it should do most things quite well.
you just change the mode if you want to try out something different and are not happy with the intelligent mode what should be quite seldom.
