Thanks for advice (all).

Regarding sharpening is this always an automatic or "embedded" feature of resizing.... ie. will that happen when rezeing with Picasa also ?

I don't know about Picasa but sharpening is a separate function in all of the software I've used. It is not linked to or part of resizing (nor should it be).

Sharpen is the simplist way. Most pros prefer the Unsharp function since it offers more control. Unsharp is a misleading name but is a sharpening function. One example of more control is that it has a threshold setting which starts sharpening after a user specified number of pixels. This can serve to NOT sharpen noise while sharpening the rest of the photo.

Photoshop and the GIMP have both the sharpen and unsharp functions.
