He could not-- and finally decreed it impossible.

I then went to the Apple store and sat with a genius to try and achieve the same thing.

He could NOT. And this is what we all learned today:

iMovie WILL import all the resolutions of clips from the HX9 EXCEPT the 1080p (60P) resolution. Same for Final Cut Pro. To access those highest resolution clips you must pull them off your SD card and convert them.

First, to locate them, drill down into your SD card to: ( Perfect description )

NO NAME >>> Private >>> AVCHD >>> BDMV >>> STREAM >>> 00001.MTS (etc.)

THERE are your video clips. The only player I have found that will play these files is the VLC (bless them):

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Now you must find a way to convert these to a format you can actually use.

For this, I have Toast Titanium 10, and it does a beautiful job. Here is a clip I uploaded to Youtube full of terrible camerawork and a fun song that just happened to be on CBC2 at the time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzyysnM8jvk

Go ahead; watch it in full 1080P, I dare ya!

The only down side is that my 1 minute 47 second clip which was originally 337MB became a 1.87 clip when converted to H.264 best quality, single pass. But, gosh darnit, this is the best video I have ever seen on a $350.00 point and shoot camera. Especially effective was the anti-shake feature which resulted in running footage smooth enough to actually use.

Hope this was useful to somebody... Its kinda nice to not be alone with these problems. I have another for you. I am using a MAC book pro ( 2010 ) I use the sony lead provided ( USB3 ) to the existing USB2 port on the MAC. I CAN not get the video in FCPX to play without dropping massive amounts of frames. Supper jittery. I convert them with media converter or Clipwrap to get the 50p in. I have tried all the conversion options , ALL jitter. Any thoughts. Anyone else had such problems ( and fixed it ) I am getting told the usb2 isn't fast enough ??? Has anyone successfully played their AVCHD 50p video in FCPX using USB2 sockets on the mac to load ? ( card is class4 )
