Default How are people feeling about the new DSC-W1???

This sounds like a really good buy for what you get. What do you all think about it so far?

So far I love what I have read.

An ultracompact camera with high megapixels, takes AA batteries, 7 picture burst mode, and manual shutter speed...WOW

Now on the downside, from my experience with Sony cameras-even the high megapixels ones- the picture quality is below what I like. I hope the W1 with its Carleiss lens will improve on that quality

Hi all, been a visitor to Steve's site for about two years, but just now realized he had a forum!

Was just wondering if anyone has any idea how soon after a camera is released does Steve get a chance to review it?

I used to own a MVC-CD400 and when the CD-500 came out I had to have the better MPEG quality, so I sold the CD400 and bought the CD-500. Of course the grass is always greenerops:; the 5.0 megapixel capability of the CD-500 slowed the read/write time to the CD considerably. The in-between shots time, startup time, etc. became way too annoying for me! So I sold that one too.

At any rate, I can't wait to get my hands on the DSC-W1 and the DCS-P100 to check them out.

Re: the W1

What are the essential differences between the W1 and the V1?
I haven't quite got my head around what the W1 is all about.

I have gleaned some from recent posts and elsewhere, e.g.:

AA batteries instead of proprietary
Improved burst mode
3 X optical instead of 4 X
better located flash (from the hand-positioning POV - too easy
to cover it with your finger on the V1).

And I gather it is smaller - 1.25" thick?

I currently own the V1, and I think its manual mode is almost its
best feature, so I would also appreciate that on the W1.

Is the W1 really pocketable?
On paper, the V1 looked almost pocketable, but in practice, it
isn't, although I appreciate that great solid "real camera" feeling
it has in the hand.

So, is the W1 essentially a pocketable V1?

If not, then what?
