In "P" or "M" mode, my W1 sometimes "loses" all the white balance settings except "AUTO". I've reset the camera which brings back all the WB settings only to "lose" them again after several shooting sessions...any ideas?

I think that the availability of the white balance choices depends upon what flash mode is active when you press the menu button...

No, I didn't think so. It sure had me going for a while, too. I think I remember someone calling it a "bug in the firmware." Whether it is a bug or not, I am uncertain, but the manual states that whenever the flash fires, the white balance is automatically set to auto. That's on page 58 of the .pdf that I have. I have used a Sony DSC-S85 whose white balance could be adjusted manually (and needed to be!) when even when the flash fired. The S85didn't have a preset fluorescent setting, though.
