I was at Circuit City today and I saw both of these cameras. One is a 4 megapixel (Canon) and the other is a 5. I am not a proessional potographer by any means, but I am looking to take soem great pictures. Picture quality is my main concern. I looked at both reviews in this web site and Steves seems to like them both. Then again, it seems as if he likes almost everything. Any opinions or suggestions. Th price difference is about $50 with the W1 being more. I alos looked at a p73 for about the same price as the Canon, but I thought the Carl Ziss lens will give me a better quality picture than a Sony lens. Any opinions or Suggestion THanks

The big difference between these two cams is the CCD size. W1 has a 1/1.8'' ccd whereas the A85 has only 1/2.7''. So this comparison says "definitely buy the W1".

I think comparing canon A80 or A95 to W1 would be more fair. But if you insist on the A85 then compare it to sony P73.

By the way i agree you about the reviews of steve. He rarely says something bad about any camera. If youjust read thetext, every cameralooks good. What weshould do is toread the specifications tables and analyzesample pics which are also included. If you don't have idea about these and you don't want learn these details, thenit is better to see also some other websites, read theuser opinions& forumsand take the average of the reviews to derive some idea.

Thank you so much. So basically eh smaller the CCD the better the picture? Canon has a 1/2.7 and Sony has a 1/1.8. HTe Sony is then better. I should be looking for that particular feature. THanks

Well, in fact it is just the opposite mrminsky. 1/2.7 is smaller than 1/1.8.
Note that it is 1 "over" smth.

I had a W1 for few weeks before I sold it. It is a lovely camera in many aspects, but the image quality was not as good as it could have been. Read the forums around here and you'll see that manu users complain of slight lack of sharpness. Other than that the camera often gives a false focus lock in low light situations which sometimes yields out of focus images, when using flash. I haven't used the A85, but from what I've seen it produces better images, has a lot more manual control and is considerably cheaper, not least because it uses much cheaper CF memory cards compared to Sony's memory stick.

I needed something more compact and replaced the W1 with Ricoh Caplio R1 and should say I'm happier with this cam than I was with the Sony. It's not perfect (no camera is) but for the price it is very good. It has 4.8x zoom starting at 28 mm and some other nice features too.
