I finally decided between the Nikon 7900 and Fuji E550 and the Sony W5. I could not find a review online of the W5 but I was able to take some shots with in a retail store. I did read reviews of the other 2 cameras on line and the main reason to skip over them was irregular low light performance. I hope the Sony will serve me well. I owed a P-32 and a P-10 and neither had a very sharp picture. The Zeiss lens on the W5 looks pretty good though. I'll post some pics as soon as it arrives. I bought at Newegg if anyone is looking for a great price...Camera, 1GB Sandisk Ultra II, 4x 2400 Sony AA's with rapid charger shipped for $430.

By the way, if I add the Sony VCL-DH2630 30mm 2.6x Telephoto lens will this give me 3x X 2.6x = 7.8x? I'm not real sure on how to figure this.

Yes, you would get 7.8x optical zoom.

Using an add-on optical lens to boost the zoom, would it mean that Image stabilization options would be required here too? Yes, I've read somwhere that IS is normally required at greater that 10x, but would it be required at the 7.8x mentioned above?

Nope. My Fuji S5000 was a 10x and it did not have IS. My Panasonic FZ-15 was x 12x and had IS but I did not use it...I could honestly tell no difference with it on/off.
