I call this acceptable as a worst case. In previous digital cameras I've owned I always steered away from digital zoom.* Something has drastically improved here to render 24X acceptable.

yes, I am very impressed with the H1's digital zoom also.

at VGA size, you can get 48x zoom. Granted it's only VGA resolution, but the image quality and zoom is incredible.

I've used the 48x digital zoom as a replacement for binoculars while hiking. It's been great to find out what objects in the very distance that my eyes can't make out are.

here's a 48x zoom image of an observatory on top of a mountain. This observatory is on a mountain peak on one side of the San Jose valley (California). I am on the complete opposite side of the valley on another peak. I am not sure the distance, but would guess at least 20-25 miles. the image is distorted from the heat in the atmosphere, and it is not very clear, but I am about 25 miles away and could only see that there was a building on the mountain. I was not able to see the other structures to the left or the antenna with my eyes. In fact the building appeared as a little speck.

Not too shabby, looking on the bright side, but 25 miles? Omg! You sure chose a nice undistinguishable spot.

yep, i've never been able to see what the top of this mountain range had on it... I could tell with my eye that there was a building of some sort.. it wasn't until i was able to take a photo with the H1's zoom that I could see the antenna on the building and the surrounding structures...
