Me too, owned a W1 for over 2 years now and it hasn't caused me any problems at all.

The luck of the draw I suppose?

I know some W1s were made in China and they were subject to a QA recall? Mine was made in Japan. Don't know if this is relevant or not.
I don't think so - my W-1 was made in Japan.

Much thanks CyberShotNut,

I tried the vacuum earlier but was unsucessful and was seriously thinking oftaking the camera in to the local Sony repair station for repairs if economical enough. I purchased a H5 to replace the W-1 in the interim, and today decided to try again, as nothing to lose but lots to gain.

I not ony zoomed, but also changed the focus distance while running the vacuum. After a few minutes, BAM, no more spot.I now have both a working compact camera W-1and a great H5 (although my wife suspects somethingsmells fishy with the new H5).

Mahalo (Thanks you) for your post,

Paniolo

i've had my made in japanW1 for over 2 years and it has no apparent spots during daylight. I just took these shots about half an hour ago:

but in someindoor darkconditions when the flash is used you can see some white circles... here is a shot which shows this (slightly out of focus):

it's not dust on the lens but those small particles which reflect/bounce the light of the flash back as described in the above posts...to prove this here is a picture in the same conditions with no "spots":
