Here are some new All Star basketball youth photos of the games.
I have the Nikon D70 , shot with the sigma 70-200 F2.8 lens, SB 800 flash. settings on A mode and other settings. They are getting much better , the add on flash is a must in these gyms. Ive tried with out not even a close comparason. Anyway check them out if you like http://www.pbase.com/image/39307585 |

Lighting seems quite good, not too much to wash out everything. Good job with that.
If you don't mind, here are some suggestions: 1. Concentrate on cropping and/or filling the frame. The fourth pic was well done in that respect, the first three had a lot of unneeded extra 'dead' space. 2. Shoot vertical when possible while doing a sport like basketball. 3. Try shooting closer to the baseline. My guess from the pics is you're shooting along the sidelines. Shooting at the corner or along the baseline, you often will have the action coming right at you and with vertical shots you'll be in great position for action shots. 4. Somewhat related to the last two points, get clearer shots of the faces. By the baseline, you'll be more likely to get pics of faces without arms in the way. Of course, that depends on where you're allowed to stand. 5. In some gyms a 2.8 could certainly require flash, but a 1.8 can often handle the darker gyms without flash. The 50/1.8 is a little slow focusing on the D70 for my needs, but the 85/1.8 is a pretty quick focuser. By not using flash, you can take advantage of the camera's FPS and buffer rate. Your mileage may vary, however, depending on just how dark your gym is. I've struggled at times getting more than 1/250 shutter speed with my 80-200 2.8 at 2.8 and ISO 1600, but with the 85 1.8 I can usually get 1/400 or faster shutter speed often at a lower ISO (no flash) even in middle school gyms with subpar (at best) lighting. Good start so far, continue to have fun shooting! :-) |

Thanks for all the suggestions , they will help.
Ill prob. buy a 1.8 lens here soon. for that . I cant stand at the baseline there isnt enough room really. But i have been standing at the corners. At first on one side and i noticed i was getting good shots but with people in the stands behind them, which wasnt good. So Ive been standing on the corners on the oposite side where the stands are behind me. I know what you mean about wasted space, Im learning more on that. I wish i didnt have to use the flash , but they turn out so much better. I like outside shots the best, football, softball, baseball. I havent really got to use this camera except football is when i got it. So im excited about this spring. Thanks again for your comments , can always use them. |
