Boily,
I was trying to get that effect and experimenting(should've experimented with cars on the street so I would know what to do before I got to the airshow)with shutter speed. That shot and the one I'm posting now where in shutter priority mode and it was set at 1/125sec. By slowing up the shutter you blur the background when panning but you really have to be moving very well with the subject as to keep it in focus with a slow shutter. Probably 50% of the shots like that were not very sharp. In contrast the other shots were probably 1/2000 to 1/3200 shutter speed. Marty |

Those must have been hard shots to get.
Those planes, even at take off, are doing about 30 mph? |

Terry,
Most of the shots near the runway were on landings as takoffs usually ended up in the middle of the runway and I wasn't allowed in that area(reserved only for pilots, callers, and press photographers). Most of these jets have high wing loadings which means they have to land fairly fast, usually around 30 to 50mph. I really owe all the good shots that I got to the speed of the Nikon lens. You really have to get the fast/expensive lens to catch the action as far as I can tell. Here's a pic of a 22' wingspan glider with a turbine mountedon top doing a low inverted pass. Amazing piloting skills. Marty |

Fantastic shots.
I went to see the real Red Arrows at an air show, you should have been there, with you skills you would have taken some beautiful shots. Thanks ![]() |

Thanks guys.
I would have loved to see the Red Arrows. The last full scale airshow I attended was last October and I was using a Panasonic FZ-20. The photos were ok but I started realizing then that I needed some faster equipment to getbetter captures. Thanks. Marty |
