Jenni.. The reason I do it is because I am on a tripod. and focus and lightiing are not easy to move around.. and as you know it is anybodys guess which will be the first barrell for each individual rider... but everyones barrel is the third... Dale

I usually take pics of the barrel that most people go to frist. That way, even people who go to the left first usually come in at the same angle as the girls that come to first because of their pocket.

Thanks everyone for your replies!!
Jenni and Cowboy, the first rodeo I shot , I shot the 3rd barrel.I had a perticular mother that told me I should be shooting the 2nd barrel because that is where the photographers get the best shots, interesting that you two both shoot the 3rd barrel. It still looks like it all comes down to the timing of the turn! I am newto this and appreciate yoursuggestions and any advice is welcome! I will post other rodeo pictures later! Thanks Randy:| |

Heres one of the first barrel. It's blurry because it was getting dark out but i wasn't sure if this gal would mind me using a flash.
Here it is: pic not good but pose is great. |

Jen nice barrel pic I like it... Amy as far a flash is concerned, in the thousands of shots i have done of horses in any venue I have never had one spook.. Never..and in events most people are so intense on the ride they don't even notice.. I shot at the Nebraska Cutting futurity in a dimley lit arena with 4 strobes and SB80 nikon speedlight, It was like lighting in there when they went off. A Gentleman expressed his concerns to me and his 3 year old in the event.. that the flashes would spook his mount I assured him they would not..and even offered if his horse walked off I would pay his entry fee.. after his winning run I asked him his opinion of the lighting, he shook his head and said he didn't even realize they were going off and they went of 21 times during the run... So Flash away... Dale
