Nice job frenchy, if you remember your settings you might let klfatcj know what you did.

I put my hand to it using PS 7.
Lasso the player. Unsharp mask: amount 80, pix 1.5, threshold 1.
Reverse selection: Gausian blur .5, Hue/Sat minus 50.

I didn't sharpen the entire image because I thought the background was too distracting. I desaturated the colors because, as terry pointed out, the elbow is a bit distracting. But, I disagree that it could be cropped because you would also crop off the players toes - and I know terry would point that out!

I think I could have taken the amount to 100 if it was hard to judge on such a small file.

Thanks for the input everyone. I really appreciate your willingness to tweak the photo. Even quick tweaks take time and this type of exchange and support has been what I like about these forums.

I am playing with sharpening and resizing and as the size increases, the limits to sharpening still exist but get the picture to where I think I'll live with it. I like the idea of desaturating the background a bit and will try it too.

BTW, I was just looking on msn.com and went over their photo gallery of great superbowl moments - some, such as "The Fridge" Perry's touchdown dive are in poor focus but capture a unique moment - as were a few shots from Kobe's 81 point game (wow!) - clearly the moment supersedes technical details at times.
