Your problem is you are too far away for the focal length. Your subject should fill about 2/3 of the frame at a minimum. The uncropped photo shows you're not even close to that threshold. Get closer or get a longer lens. THAT is the problem.

Yep, 100% agree with John. If you are having to work at these distances with the 70-200 then closing the aperture down will potentially help the focus difficulties but it is still a tough one to get the sharp results desired. You might find that a 1.4x TC will help the situation here so see if you can borrow one for a play.

a 1.4 won't help from that distance. He'd need at least twice the focal length. And I'm not sure a 2x TC is the answer either. I'd recommend a 400mm lens AND getting closer.
