Yep - 5 is a definite winner. I love it!

Great timing and focus. Timing is good on some of your other shots, but the focus is off. Shooting with wide apertures definitely takes some practice - keep at it - before long you'll be getting more like #5. Your timing is there, and that's tough for volleyball. Now, you just need to refine your focus technique.

Good job!

Thanks for the comments, folks. I do struggle with focus with the lens wide open. I've tried several different techniques - single focus, continuous focus, and manually focusing on a spot on the net and waiting for the players to enter the zone. I would be grateful for any tips anyone may have to help me out. Let me know what works for you.

Thanks

Greg

Greg, first I would recommend stopping down to 2.0 - you can spare a little shutter speed and an extra inch gained in dof can make a difference.

I use Servo mode, center point only - but the key to success is getting the center point on the face of your subject before the action occurs so the camera can get a good focus lock. With such a shallow DOF, your target needs to be the face - that's what you want in focus.

Good luck and keep at it. you'll get there!
