first all i don't care too much on this sport, and now after shooting it, i find it quite boring, they stop alot, throw flags all the time, no continuity. and it it is very hard to shoot!! they pile up alot! hahahahahahaha huge props to you guys who get these awesome shots! i read somewhere, at one of the superbowls, they brought in like 20 of the world's top photographers to shoot it, and combined they took like some crazy # of pictures in the 10s of thousands, and could only really keep a handfull! well here are my less than handful! hahahahahahaha #1

John - not too bad. I like the last one a good bit. But, did you run some noise reduction on these? They all have the look of having a lot of noise reduction - all the detail has been stripped - skin is smooth without texture and grass looks like plastic. Or perhaps had some in-camera noise reduction on?

Good and crisp. I like #2 & #4. Nice job of capturing the action. I know what you mean about how hard it is to shoot American football. The action is so often confusing and muddled, harder to anticipate a good shot opportunity through the viewfinder. Soccer develops so much more cleanly and you don't have the huddled masses of bodies through which to shoot.

I think part of my problem with anticipating is that I have become so used to what the game looks like from above from my years as a sportscaster and now as a PA guy that I had difficulty the other night recognizing what was developing until I was behind the play.

hi johng,

i used a little unsharpmask, well maybe too much! hahahahahahaand i don't think my white balance was right! i was fooling with it home the night before and forgot to change it! hahahahaha i'm old soi i forget sometimes! now what was i saying? i was so excited to shoot, but i really am not happy with my work here, i will just keep working on it!

hi trojan,

thank you! football is definitely a hard sport to shoot! it seems easy because you can get in a good position, but that is just an illusion! and really its not because i didn't do well, i have never been a big fan of american football, i'm just not interested in it. also the night shots i took were terrible!!! hahahahahaha but thanks guys!!

It isn't too much unsharp mask. Did you maybe crop these heavily? Too much USM would cause a different problem. The problem I'm talking about is lack of detail - usually either from too much noise reduction or too much cropping. WB isn't too bad - but you've done something very different here vs. the post of the practicecatch you had the other day. Look at that shot again and all the detail - these shots are missing that detail. So something has to be different. Either different gear or different technique.

I see what you are saying.

I think that waht has happenned is that the focus was set out of fram in most of them and these were cropped to the action which was further from the DOF area.

If you look at #1 , the focus seems to be on the ball carriers feet.

#2 is focused around the midsection of #42 and maybe a little further left out of the crop.

#3 seems to be fairly in-focus but, way too much USM causeing grainyness and some grass distortion. (I would like to see the original of this one)

#4 Fucus area seems to be around the right elbow of the ball carrier.

In all of them, the excessive USM seems to be further adding to the distortion.

Some very good action captures. I just think he is having focus issues.

YOU DONT LIKE AMERICAN FOOTBALL?? Man, thats just un-american! Joking of course. Besides it being my favorite sport, its also my fav to shoot. Put it this how many pics of the pitchers contorted facecan you stand? Youve seen one, youve seen them all. Motorcycles. how many shots of the bike leaning into the corner can you stand? Seen one, youve seen them all...Tennis...dont even go getting my drift? LOL Seriously, other than what seems to me also, a focusing issue, youve got great timingon each shot, cpatured the intensity of the faces and cropped up nice and tight...perhaps a little too tight on a couple but man, I'll look at these all day long and not get bored.
