Hi All,
While over in the US with work we had a trip organised to Monmouth Park to see that horses. I had never been before so new I wanted to try some things out. I was let down slightly as I was not able to take my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 with me due to weight, so I had to make do with my cheap and nasty Tamron 70-300mm f4 - 5.6. It was not too good as the focus was really too slow for shooting horses, however I did manage to get some OK shots. I was trying to capture the movement/energy and emotion of the races to decided to go for a slow shutter speed. I experimented from 1/80th to 1/160 to see how it went. Here are a few of the ones I did like. Let me know what you think. Mark |

Great shots Mark! I especially like #3 - perfect backround blur coupled with the horses' flexed muscles and a nice, tight crop. :G
Hope you enjoyed the Jersey Shore - I went to graduate school @ Monmouth University a few miles from where you were. |

![]() I've always liked motion blur in the legs of horses during a race. Did you perchance go lower than 1/80s? Maybe a couple of more lower? Ifso then how was the sharpness? |

Thanks guys for your feedback.
Andrew, I only tried a couple but would have needed more time to practise and as we were only there for 7 races and most were less than a lap I did not have enough chances to perfect the pan so decided to speed it up to ensure I had better results. SSL, it is a lovely area, we were staying in New Brunswick for the week. Also managed to get a game of golf in on the Monday, so it was not all work, work, work. Mark |
