Yesterday afternoon, I gave my soccer team the day off since we had a road game the night before. This allowed me to slip off to the baseball diamond and take my first try at shooting baseball. My respect for some of the outstanding baseball shots I've seen on this forum went up quickly. I had to shoot through the fence about mid-way down the first base line. The pitchers proved fairly easy to shoot on the delivery.

However, action on the field was another matter. About the only interesting shot I got was a back-handed stab by the first baseman, and the focusing isn't as crisp as I would have liked. The number is in focus, but facial detail isn't great.

Lighting was very poor....Very overcast day with no lights on the me low shutter speeds and making my attempts at catching hitters very disappointing. I tried a variety of lenses and was never able to settle on one, although a Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 probably gave me my best results overall.

Basically, I learned that I have a lot to learn to shoot baseball well, and that I need to go back and read some of the tips for good baseball shooting more closely.

Hey Paul.

shot 2 is probably the best of the bunch.

Shot 1 has nice bokeh but isn't sharp - a portrait style shot should have better sharpness. Neither the face, glove or number on jersey are sharp so focus is off by more than a few inches. The key to good portrait shots is tight framing in-camera. You really want the shot framed that tightly in-camera and not cropped down. That's especially true if you're using the Tamron 70-300 or similar grade glass.

shot 3 is completely back focused by a few feet - the player in the background is in better focus.

Baseball is going to be a challenge. When you get your Tamron 70-200 it will be too short. So you'll need a TC if you want to shoot baseball. I find even 300mm to be too short for a lot of work.

Good luck on the next outing. I'm jealous - no spring sports for a few weeks yet here.

I'm jealous too. It will be a couple of months before any baseball here:blah:
