In July I requested advice regarding a camera purchase for VB and Swimming.

I ended up with a canon 40D and a 85mm lens. I'm really enjoying it.

Here is one of my favorite shots from the last game.

Good timing on the shot! I hope you are enjoying the new toy..

My suggestions:

1. Crop tighter - seems to be some dead space on the right
2. With the 85mm, you'll need to be closer to get really sharp faces. For most people it's not a big deal, but just something to consider.

You are off to a great start.. Keep shooting and posting!

Glad you're enjoying the new toys.

Exposure and white balance look pretty good in this shot.

As mentioned, you're going to need to get a LOT closer. There is a lot of uninteresting dead space in this shot. And the timing is a bit off. You want to capture the shot closer to peak action (i.e. as close to a hit as possible). It's going to take a lot of practice so don't get discouraged.

The biggest advice is to get closer - you really should be within 20 feet of the subject (not the court but the subject of your shot).

Keep at it!
