Thought I'd share a few pictures I took today. The first three were from the gold medal match, 73 kilo, the first being the winning throw. The second and third shots raise the question for me - better emotional moment vs sharper focus. Comments welcome.

The second one is definitely a strong image giving a sense of Modern times Gladiators! Yes, many things changed but not everything...

Nice work! Between 2 & 3 I still like 2. That's the whole story right there - from both participants. Thanks for sharing!

Hi,

Nice pics.

Which lens did you used and how far from the tatami where you?

I am very interested because I would like to do the same for my aikido

club.

Thanks,

Stephan

I used a Sigma 70-200 f2.8. The pics were shot at ISO 1600, noise reduction with Neat Image and some Adobe CS processing for colour/saturation.

On the one pic you can see there were two tatamis (I don't know much of the terminology - don't know if tatami means the whole surface or each individual area) I was standing abou 13-15 feet from the closer one. Although I moved forward and to the front of the tatami to take some pics of the farther one, looking at the angles on these shots, I think I was still beside the closer one for the pics I included here. The winning throw and celebration shots were from a match on the far mat.

The competition was in our convention centre - the lighting wasn't bad, but not quite as good as it is in an arena or university gym
