Kentucky Derby

OK, I took a bunch (300+) of pictures at Churchill Downs on Friday & Saturday. Many were work related (that's why I was there). Here are some of the Derby. I practiced on a couple earlier races, ended up going to full manual :crazy1: control, did some testing, then the sun came out! I still think they came out pretty well. Some cropping will help but wanted to show the full frame.

#1: Derby horses walking to the starting gate.

#4 After the race as they're slowing the horses. Look at the mud on the fronts.

NICE! Ol' Calvin did a nice job on that quicksand they called a track. That had to be the wettest I've seen that track in 15 years. Yuck.

Very nice, that is pretty wet. I have not been to the derby since I left ft. knox.

At the begining of the race, all the horses were different colors, but at the end of the race ...

Nice shots. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you guys like. Posting them here they look a little soft. Don't know if that's Photobucket or not. Anyway... more from the race...

I've been at the last 10 Derby's (and a couple before that). This was the wettest I remember. In 2004(?) we had an severe thunderstorm go over the track in the afternoon, but this year was an ALL DAY rain. MISERABLE working conditions.

What's not to like? Ol' Calvin sure had a time, didn't he? Once again, nice shots!

You definitely captured the wet and muddy track very well--love the image of the woman's feet. I also like #2. Normally I would have suggested a closer crop to show the horses. However, in this case I think it shows the very muddy (almost paddy like) conditions of the track. Nice series.

BTW, when I moved to Kentucky 19 years ago, I was told for the Derby, to bet on a horse whose name starts with the letter "S"...Secretariat, Strike the Gold, Seattle Slew, Super Saver...you do the Math ;)!!!

I just did.

Since 1875, Derby winners with names starting with "S" won 14 times (10.3% of the time.) That's more than any other letter. But "B" came in second at 13 (9.6%), and "C" came in third at 11 (8.1%).

But, of course, 2 horses in yesterday's field had names starting with "S", which is 10% of the time too. Maybe names for horses starting with "S" are just more popular than other names.

I'll handicap using data from past performances. Thanks anyway.

Shooting in the rain is probably more fun than shooting in bright sunshine.

You definitely know when you've got a leader from start to finish..

It's good to be the leader..

Greg-

I can't pull up the EXIF data... what kind of zoom, f-stop, and shutter are you using?

Thanks
Sam
