These shots usually work better when you shoot the participant head on. As is the case here, the background becomes too distracting. Also, try to capture the moment of impact with the sand, itll add a lot of "drama" to the capture.

Thanks for the advice, i'll try and catch some head on (if the officials allow) and I have my Tamron 70-300mm now, will post more soon.

Yeah, the background is definitely a distraction here. It also seems to be really soft. Could just be the distance from the subject not allowing for a shallow dof..
