Although not as sharp as I would like, I still think this is quite a good shot.

It adds ammo to me getting a nice SLR though

Neat shot.

If you want to include a lot of the background in the shot though, try to get the rider more in the frame rather than at the far edge, leaving the frame. Assuming you're not showing the jump itself try to get the rider a little left of center in the frame (usually accomplished by taking the photo with him in the center and then cropping to move him to the left). That way there is image for him to move into rather than having him positioned so he's leaving the frame..
