I know the angle makes it a little difficult to tell - but the timing turned out perfect (and I'll freely admit that's more luck than skill

That one would be a tough call. I guess yelling out "tie goes to the runner" wouldn't help, huh? lol That's an old belief that may or may not be true, depending on how you want to interpret the rules.
To my eyes, it looks like the runner's foot would have been on the base before the ball was all the way in the glove. But, it's hard to tell with the dirt kicked up obscuring the view. |

I agree with the tie goes to runner rule but there are a couple points:
1. the game has kidsumpiring - maybe 14 or 15 years old so I cut them some slack over the H.S. umps :G 2. There were some really, really bad calls in the game but I was impressed the parents all took it in stride and no one complained. To be honest, I could never be an umpire - having seen how some parents behave I'd be throwing a lot of people out of the field area (actually a H.S. ump did that at one game - gave the one team 10 minutes to get the one parent out of the field and into his car - if he didn't see the car leaving in 10 minutes the team was going to forfeit - good for him). |

That's a hard angle to call from Especially the low angle of it. From what I can see there I would almost have to call him safe because it looks like the baseman does not control of the ball but like you said 14-15 year old umps. I have a little over 20 years of umping in little league (i'd rather take photos but did three games this year).
Anyway good shot John! |
