Those are great shots! They freeze the action very well.

Wow very nice. What camera are you using?
There is a motocross on ice competition next week-end in my hometown, will try to take some shots. Theymight not be as good as yours, but will give a try. |

Awesome shots!
Another technique would be to use a long lens, shoot wide open, and blur the background a little so that you're isolating the racers. Sometimes the background can distract from the shot, while other times it adds to the shot. Keep up the good work! |

Thanks! I'm using a D-Rebel with a Canon Zoom lens (75-300). I had planned on trying the panning thing, but my kids got soaked from body sledding so we left early. Kadok- I found that the first corner of the first lap was very dynamic because they were all bunched up and the snow was really flying as they crammed around the corner. I tried the big jump from every angle, down low, nearly straight on, up on the hillside by the crowd, and I tried to eliminate possible background distractions with angle of attack. One of my best shots would have been awesome without the truck poking out from behind it. It is funny how they say to follow the pros and go where they go. The guy who was there was following me around and he had a $7000 camera with a monster lens. I thought that was funny. I'd love to lay all of our shots out side by side to see how I did. I took about 80 shots within a few hours. I used levels when I got home, but I think it almost made the darks too dark and the lights too light. I'm debating about whether I like the originals best.
Fun day. It was fun to feel like a pro and spend the whole time just focused on the shots. |
