I am still learning and trying...I am very limited as to where I can be at the pool. These were taken from the stands.

Unfortunately, from your vantage point, the backgound is too distracting. I see that you shot these with the 85/1.8 wide open. The 100/2.0 would have given you even less depth of field, blurring the background even more, and it would have framed the subjects tighter.
Were these just reduced, or were they cropped as well?

Some where cropped. I don't know what you mean by reduced.
I up load them to photobucket. I believe they automatically lower the resolution. |

I agree with TCav. the background is unfortunately a bit too distracting. I did the same thing when i tried to shoot little kids baseball game.

I think you did a pretty good job. The best way to control the background is to change your angle. Shoot more of a 90 degree angle so you have more room behind the diver and you don't have the ladders / other divers in view. With fixed length lenses it's a bit tough to do perfectly because you're often limited on distance to subject. But if you can change your angle, then do it.

Thanks everyone. I would love to have been allowed on the deck. This pool had to be the worst one yet for trying to find a spot. Soon summer diving will start and hopefully better opportunities. This meet I focused more and framing and lighting...didn't even think about the back ground. I guess I am so use to seeing all that I never gave it much thought. Plus I will only shoot during warm up and not during the actual meet so a lot more kids are moving around...I would not have been able to shoot at a 90 degree or even down due to the way the stands are. But summer I can try that the coach will allow me to shoot from the 5 meter board.
