Shot these today with Canon30D and Canon 85mm f1.8.
The exif is still there if you want to look at settings. Marjons (in red) won 3 - 0 as well as winning the netball, rugby, football meaning they took the overall cup.... nice! As usual with this gym lighting is a real pain but here you go anyway. Mark 1 ![]() 2 ![]() 3 ![]() 4 ![]() 5 ![]() 6 ![]() 7 ![]() 8 ![]() |

Thanks John, that was the 3rd time out with the 85mm so starting to get the hang of it and how to read where to get a shot. How many shots do you usually manage to get in a match and how many of those are keepers? I think I got about 50 keepers which was approx 30%.
How do you go about getting blocks as I've found these the most difficult? |

Mark,
As for keepers, I have around a 50% keeper rate - but because I'm selling to parents I end up taking/keeping shots that aren't great sports shots just to have more photos of each athlete. For instance, I'll take shots of the serve which no newspaper would ever publish but parents like anything with their kids in them. So, my keeper rate is padded with some easy shots. As for blocks. You have 4 angles you can use: Along the net (same side) which gets you a profile. Angle over the net from the side (an option with the 85mm) From the back of the court - you'll find 135mm would be about the perfect focal length for this shot - so you'll need your 70-200 or 120-300. From the stands OVER the net. The opportunities are plentiful at the higher levels because there is almost always a kill attempt and a challenge. Now, there might not be an actual block but the challenge is always there. Typically I'll pre-focus on the net and when the blocker goes up I'll acquire him/her (since I pre-focused the focus motor doesn't have far to go). |
