I was curious about the Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM too. Has anyone used this for day sports?

the 50-500 is a very good lens. But it's big and heavy. You'll want to use a monopod with it. It's not as sharp as the 100-300 f4 and it's slower to focus. But if you have to shoot from outside the fence it just might be the best option as it gives you plenty of reach and still good sharpness throughout. Just remember it's a 5.6 (well 6.3) lens - when lighting gets poor this lens won't do very well. And if you want shots of the pitcher or hitters motions- get used to ISO 800 and 1600. You'll be needing them to get the 1/1000 - 1/2000 shutter speeds a lot of the time. |

Points well taken,
80-200mm F2.8 with a 1.4 or 2x TC the same as as the 70-300 Nikon VR? Should I get the Tc or get the 100-300mm sigma? IF is a real bonus when up against the fense!! Will the TC yiels similar results on a good sunny day? |

Sorry - can't help you out with a comparison of 80-200 plus TC vs sigma 100-300.

Exploring possibilities?
A tc will loose 1 f stop? F3.5 still fast enough for sunny days? |

Just noticed Tokina makes a 80-400 F4.5 relativly small in size with tokina tank like quality.
