Took a long lunch today near Ellington Field hoping to catch some planes coming in for the airshow this weekend. I managed to catch the USAF Thunderbirds doing some warmups, along with one of the biplanes, and a photographer's plane. All of these were taken with my Pentax K100D and the Tamron 28-300 in AF-C. I accidently left the ISO set at 800 (doh!). Cropped and tweaked in PPL3 (yeah, I know I have some dust in some shots).
Here is a long shot of the Thunderbirds in formation along with a biplane/stuntplane and a photographer's plane. ![]() Here's a closer shot. ![]() Here's the photographer hanging out of the blue/white plane. ![]() Got some nice high speed passes at the end of the runway. ![]() And some nice low speed passes. ![]() Finally, saw one of the "locals" while I was out there. ![]() I'm sure I'll get lots more shots this weekend, including a lot of the old warbirds! Russ,
Really like the low speed pass - it's a very good shot. The others I'm not too fond of - to far away and/or too soft - but that low speed is GREAT! |

![]() I could probably postprocess them a little better, and if I wasn't in love with posting large shots, they'd look better a little smaller. All in all, though, I'm satisfied for a quick afternoon shoot. Thanks for the comments. Russ |

I think it's just a limitation of the lens and reality - some times things are just too far away to get a sharp shot. No fault of the photographer.

Here are a few shots from today...mainly old warbirds (a little easier to catch than the jets).
"The attack came out of the sun..." ![]() Reenactment of the attack on Pearl Harbor ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fighter escort... ![]() And finally, an unimpressed spectator to all the events.... ![]() Thanks for looking. All taken with my Pentax K100D and the Tamron 28-300 (non-DI). Russ |
