I got to try out my new Pentax SMCP FA-50mm tonight on high school volleyball. The autofocus did a pretty good job locking on. I was surprised that I had to open it all the way to f1.4 and still had to use ISO 1600 to get to a decent shutter speed.

Not a surprise that I had to go to heavier crops with the shorter lens...particularly on the baseline shot

I'm really jealous. I use the K10D with the same lens and my shots aren't nearly as nice. I hope you'll be posting more. It's nice to see what the Pentax can do!

hey trojan those look great!! excellent work, next time try to go higher with exposure and see if you get a little faster shutter speed. this won't give faster shutter speed but try to set the white balance for the gym. not that yours is off, but i am interested to see how they come out. i have been fooling with custom wb.

john, thanks for viewing and commenting. Overall, I was very pleased with the little lens. About the only way I can get any more shutter speed is by dialing in a little exposure compensation. I hate to do that because of the increase in noise since I'm already at ISO 1600. I may try it, though,
It's funny you bring up custom white balancing. I grabbed one of my students out of the stands wearing a white t-shirt. It was after I had him standing that I noticed the red shirt on under the white, giving my "whites" a nice pink tone, lol. Rather than try to find another white shirt, I just went back to auto. I used custom white balancing on the football game I shot Frida night, though, and was very happy because of the difficulty of one team's uniforms, dark purple jerseys and pants. My first shots showed them blue, so I went to custom white balance. The result was an accurate rendition of the jersey color. (I couldn't help but laugh this morning when I saw the newspaper and noted that the color pic on the front page of sports featured bright blue jeseys and pants.) Here's an example: (Pentax K10d, 135mm f2.8 MF Takumar lens, 1/200, ISO 1600,-0.3 EV....Levels brought up in PSP, light noise reduction with Noiseware) BTW, this shot is taken as the running back broke a tackle and accelerated through the line. He didn't stop till he reached the end zone 91 yards away. |
