Not sure if you exceeded the size limit and thus the site re-sized these but all are very soft. The slide photo is way too soft to keep and even so as you guessed it's not likely a keeper: Third baseman isn't making a play so the shot doesn't highlight him and backside of the slider isn't really a keeper. It's frustrating when you have the timing down, but it happens.

thanks for the cc john-i was shooting with the sigma 70 200mm and d90 with a 1.4x converter-thus giving me 280mm instead of 200- i stoped down 2 stops from f4 to f5 so it would be sharper, at f4 with the tele they are real soft and your right they still look soft-could that be from the generic sigma gear(lens and converter?)with the real deal nikon gear say d700 and the nikon 70 300 2.8 would the results be night and day or is it just me as a shooter? thanks for your advice-john

The sigma 70-200 2.8 is a very nice lens, but it doesn't take a TC too well. As for nikon gear - there is no 70-300 2.8 lens - there is a 70-200 2.8 and there is a 300mm 2.8. As for the d700 - it's an exceptional sports shooting camera, but it's full frame so you really need longer lenses to take advantage of that (think 300-400mm).

The d90 is a fine camera - in your shoes I would recommend a glass upgrade over a body upgrade. Of course now things start to get expensive. Your options are:
Sigma 100-300 f4
Sigma 120-300 f2.8
Nikon 300mm 4.0
Nikon 300mm 2.8
Nikon 200-400

Just on a technical note, this is actually 2/3 of a stop rather than 2 stops, starting at f4 then 2 stops would be f8.

Back to the change of kit then JohnG's list is pretty much the way to go if money allows. Nothing wrong at all with the body but the change in glass will really help.
