Default Lacrosse

Some youth lacrosse. I was coaching this team, so not much time to take pics, but took a game off and got these. One thing I tried was to get the faces exposed, so lots of blown highlights... C&C Welcome:
Shot with Canon 50D, Manual, 70-200 f/2.8 with 1.4x..

more than just "lots of blown highlights"... more like, "everything is blown out except the faces".

I think your technique of trying to expose the face correctly caused more harm than good as a photo overall, especially #4.

Possibly a different metering mode would be a solution to properly exposed photos?

Thanks for the feedback.

I agree that #4 is definitely the most overexposed of the bunch. I was shooting manual, so the metering was due to the photographer, not the camera.

One of the reasons for the post in the first place was to get different opinions on 'properly exposed'. For me, 1-3 are properly exposed as I'm able to see the facial expressions as well as the details in the clothes - with some exceptions in the super-white helmets and shorts. In any case, I appreciate the feedback.

Sometimes there is no right answer. Sometimes it's a question of - do you need shots from a particular game or not. If not, then wait until the next game. This is really the worst possible scenario. Because the reality is - the dynamic range is just too great here.

That's what makes this so much fun. This was the last game of the year. I'd been coaching so not taking pics. Last opportunity and it was bright bright sunlight - 2:00 in the afternoon.
