Default DIY Portrait Lighting and set

I'd like to shoot some portraits for an upcoming fund-raiser. My experience is limited to having found the portrait setting on my T2i. And I figured out how to put the battery in. That counts too, I'm sure.

I know I need some sort of DIY soft box(es) and a background. For the soft boxes I'm thinking of a mount for 3-4 200w compact flourescents surrounded by dark fabric, leading to a translucent diffuser in front. I can build anything as long as we don't worry about "lightweight" or "portable", but I could use some advice on materials - fabric for the sides and for the difuser. Any ideas?

Perhaps the soft boxes will eliminate the need for a flash, but just in case, what sort of a backdrop works well to prevent glare?

Thanks for the help!

Jim
