Hi everyone,
Im looking to buy a strobe for outdoor portraits, that I can use with a large softbox (prbly 100x100cm)

I would be shooting all kinds of portraits, including individual headshots to groups of up to 5 (families for example), and would like something that can be both mains powered or battery/generator powered.

Can anyone recommend a power output (ie watts) for this kind of work? I would like to be able to beat the sun in some cases.

Any general advice and/or product recommendations much appreciated!!

all the best,
Gerry

As far as "beating the sun" itself, I've successfully done so with a 60ws Morris! You can check out any of the 150ws strobe kits out there in the market but if you need more juice than that, try a set up like this:

Thanks Abs.
Ive just been checking out the link you posted sounds like a great alternative to the more costly brand name strobes, so if these are compatible with Elinchrom Speedrings, does this mean they can fit all the elinchrom modifiers, beauty dishes, honey combs, softboxes etc?

(Im not hung up on a particular brand for the light as long as it can fit a wide range of light modifiers, (well mainly softboxes and honey combs)

Can someone buzz in and let me know if there are only a few standard size fittings for add on modifiers among studio lights, or are there like hundreds of slightly different sizes out there, just trying to pick a light that gives me lots of choice for accessories so im not limited to buy only 'genuine' x brand add-ons, I'd like a light that accepts various 3rd party products.

thanks again Abs!

My pleasure, Gerry!

In theory, if the units will fit Ellinchrom speed rings, it should be able to take in the same brand's modifiers as there will only be one bayonet mount on them. Just the same, I'll leave the tech stuff to the experts.
