Who has a good softbox
After a discussion on softboxes on another board I thought I'd ask here if anyone is using softboxes. I was considering an Alien Bees softbox as it was modestly priced but one user reported a two stop difference from center to edge. What's the point of a softbox if you have that much of a hot spot . Another reported less than two tenths of a stop variation with a Larson softbox but I can't find them anywhere. Is Larson still in business? Has anyone used Photoflex softboxes?

I have a set of Westcott softboxes. I use them with a Visatec lighting set and they are very heavy duty and well made. They make mount rings for just about anything out there. I think they are worth the $$ you spend, particulaly if your setting them up and taking them down all the time, thats what puts the wear and tear into them.

Where's the best place to buy a photoflex softbox? Any good online discount stores?

I've have nothing but excellent service from B&H Photo, and they carry Photoflex softboxes at good prices. That's where I'll probably get mine when I recover from vacation.

FWIW I got a large photoflex softbox and it's working very well. Haven't metered the surface but lighting is appears very even and it's very efficient. With a B400 (160ws) at 12 feet I meter f5.6 Entirely adequate for digicam use as work distances will be much closer still. It's huge but I think easier to work with than a big umbrella and has far better control.
