Default Umbrellas - please help

Hi,

Well i have a rather stupid question for most of you , but i want a clarification...

From what i seen, there are 3 types of umbrellas: diffusion , reflex and softbox-umbrella

I will take mostly photos in light-tents and maybe some portraits... and i need the light so it won't cast any nasty reflections

My question is which of the umbrellas is used for what... and what effects will they have... and what do you recommend me for the photos i want to take

Thanks a lot !
