Default Softbox for flash

What's the right size for a softbox to wrap around a camera flash, like a 580?

As big as you can make it. The larger it is the more effective.

Doing it professionally on the side and all being new to you doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. That book link you posted is a good start. A good remote trigger that I have and use is made by Vivitar http://tinyurl.com/3o6xt6d and possibly goes by other names as well.

Makes more sense than you might think. I once read an article in Popular photography, I think it was, about how most photo enthusiast are more knowledgeable and artistic than most pros.

A professional photographer has to be a good salesman but only needs to be a mediocre photographer.
