Sure .. For any camera to use studio flash it is best if it has the following, the Sony has all the features so you will not have any problems:

1) Needs an external flash sync or hotshoe (717 has a hotshoe)
You connect to the flashes using one of the following methods:
Wired (works) (Note that for a hotshoe I would advise using a safesync type adapter)
IR type flash sync (better) or
Radio flash sync (best).

Cameras without external syncs/hotshoes are more difficult to use (but not impossible).

2) Needs a manual mode where you can control both the aperature and shutter speed. (full manual on the sony).

Fully automatic cameras will have a hard time without lots of tricks.

3) A manual white balance is nice to have (the 717 has this feature).

-----------------------------------------
The 717 is a great camera and you can get some great pro shots with it.
