I'm a beginner so that shot sort of confuses me. It looks like there was a very hard light coming from the model's right side, and a softer directional light coming from her left pointing towards the bottom to get rid of the harsh shadows, but really I have no idea.

Anyone who works in a studio care to share?

The main light looks like it's above her left side at about 35 degrees. The fill seems to be to her right front...too much to her right, (thus giving the conflicting shadows). If the fill were more directly in front & a stop of 2 softer, I believe it would be a stonger image. As it is, the shadows don't make sense.
