I been able to geta Sunpak 4000AF to respond to the Coolpix 5700 in manual mode, but itwon't flash at all inTTL mode. Any suggestions? I have to take some pictures in a steel mill. The buildings are huge, the lighting far above. I needmuch more light than the speed light can deliver. I think my home email address is listed so if you could cc [email protected] I would appreciate it.

If the flash is not dedicated for Nikon cameras, you won't get TTL control with your camera.

Even though the Nikon flashes that are recommended to be used with the 5700 can operate in TTL mode with the 5700, the flash metering isn't really TTL anyway. The flash sensor on the 5700 is built into the frame of the pop-up flash. The camera may be able to send the start/stop signals to the external flash but the metering will not have the accuracy of true TTL.

So, except for having to enter a few camera settings manually into the flash, you might well get results in manual mode comparable to what you would get with TTL mode. It's mostly a matter of convenience.

If the flash is dedicated for TTL operation with your camera, make sure that the camera speedlight is in the up position when you try to fire the external flash in TTL mode. If the cameras flash sensor is not deployed, the external flash may not get a signal to flash.

Thanks Grant, not sure how I missed this. Anyway, the flash is supposed to be compatible in TTL mode. I'll try it with the speedlight up
