Walking into work this morning, I saw that someone had not put out their cigarette completely in the ashtray outside, so I tried to capture the smoke wafting from it. Total failure. :? Any suggestions? Would you need an open aperature? What kind of shutter speed? Maybe I needed a black background?

Lit from the side as much as possible and dark background has worked well for me. Thin, almost ethereal cigarette smoke is tough to capture!

A little fill flash often works well with the right background.

Hi there.

Here is my way.
The picture you can see was taken with my flash gun directed straight up, reduced power to 1/16 and I put a white board just above it to reflect the light.
Of course dark backround helped a lot.

I hope it helped.
