I am not sure, I'm quite new to this as well so I'm stabbing in the dark here but, could he have applied a layer, blurred the layer and erased the parts he wanted sharpened?

use a mask and blur it, then paint back in what you want sharp.

I'm a little late on this, but, I think they adjust the levels by moving the left fader right and the right fader left. I saw an article somewhere recently on this. It was titled something like "model effects for photographs".
I've seen a lot of RV and Boat adds that use that look. |
