Hi. I just linked to your website thru Steves Digicams and have what may sound like a dumb question. I was reading some of your suggestions about bouncing flash off the ceiling. I have tried this a few times, and it never works for me. The subject is always underexposed. Sometimes when it seems like I almost have it right, the picture is still bad because the eyes look all wrong. Are there any tips or tricks for bouncing flash off the ceiling? Thanks!

You have to remember, that the reflecting surfaces has to be very bright and in some cases you have to take off the small softbox, as the softbox stops some of the flashlight.
It's a well known trick when shooting with external flash indoor! |

Another obvious question is how far away was the ceiling?
Thanks for writing that, I'll head over there at lunch. Flash photography is something I need to get better at. My subjects almost always need a little more light. Eric |

You also need to consider the angle and colour of the ceiling.
I 'ruined' a shot by setting my flash to bouce off a wood panelled ceiling that sloped upward in the direction of the shot. When looking at the shot at home I realized that I had the flash almost parallel to the ceiling - not much bounce happening that way! With the wood being stained brown the what reflected light there was took on a dark hue. In this case it would have been better to shoot with the flash straight on. |
