I looked around to see how I can get my 3,000 or so slides on DVDs for distribution within my family. I have written a one-page essay on how I now successfully do this. Basically, it involves photographing the projected slide images. The process takes some time, but can be done at minimal cost. I use a Pentax K10D, but any DSLR should work nicely.

My instructions cover the equipment, the settings, and the methods. It's a little tricky, but anyone who can use a modern camera can do it.

I will send the instructions to the first 100 or so people who mail me a self-addressed, stamped envelope by U.S. mail to Jerry Epple, 309 West 124th Street, Kansas City, MO 64145. Sorry, no answers on this forum. I simply am too busy to keep abreast of it, and only scan it once a month or so.

I did this with my kids baby and growing up pictures...You know, the ones that have been in the old shoe box in the back of the closet for ever...Probably did the same thing you did with the slide projector on the white sheet in the dark room...Not the best method but it worked...There are machines out now that you load the slide, and its converted to digital and had I not done your method several years ago, I would go the easy route today...The older I get, the more I am into "easy"...No matter how we end up converting the slides though, we are keeping the memories from fading away....:G

Projecting is an interesting idea and the price is right:-) but would it not be easier to use a cheep flatbed scanner?
Like the epson v100 or 4490 (100$-200$) that will cleanly scan 4 slides at a time at up to 4800dpi?

Or a slide duplicator ( ~ 90$ )

Both these method produce very good high quality digital files.

( I've got about 15000 slides I keep meaning to get around to scaning someday when I get a round-to-it :?)

I own a Polaroid slide scanner which does a pretty decent job. But since I purchased a digital camera I figure a slide copier, which is a tube that fits over the lens in which your slide is placed, would be even better. A frosted white plastic covers the end and you just shoot your slides by pointing your camera at a light source. They sell for under $50.
